This movie is good enough I suppose for the five dollar matine, but I wouldn't say it's special enough for the nine dollar ticket they charge. Wait for the DVD, because they're really is no reason to see this movie in theaters. I'm not saying it's all that bad, because its funny enough and smart enough but that's all I'm saying. This movie is just enough to warrant that happy face. The thing is, I got the feeling that this movie was someone's first try at directing, writing, or acting and all that. It didn't flow exactly and it started off either too quick or too slow, I couldn't tell which. Either way I left feeling they could have done more or less, but I don't really know how it was possible. The good news is that it wasn't offensive, and this movie certainly could have been. The Special Olympics and the Special Athletes aren't made fun of, but are used credibly for heart and humour. Some of the funniest lines are spoken by the athletes in this movie. If anything else, this movie will give respect to the organization, not take anything from it.
I think that maybe this was one of the movies where the idea went wrong. If I'm not mistaken, a person faking mental retardation to rig the special olympics is not new. Cartman from South Park did it a few years back. The thing was, that was a perfectly timed twenty minute show. This was an hour and a half and because it's a movie not a cartoon, the ending had to be sentimental and conclusive. Like I said, this movie had more heart in it, but if you just want to laugh then maybe you should see the South Park episode instead.
